A retractable roof was certainly a necessity here in Canada for the Blue Jays. Before the Skydome opened in mid 1989, the Blue Jays played at a former football facility named Exhibition Stadium, built in 1879. The exposed playing surface was subject to all sorts of Canadian weather phenomenon, including high winds, frigid tempatures and of course snow. A 9 inning inaugural game at Exhibition Stadium was played in 1977 despite being covered by snow. It is the only game ever played in the history of MLB on a snow covered field.
