When Memorial Stadium debuted in 1950, as a semi-completed structure, it was the culmination of nearly 50 years of trying to get back, what Baltimore had lost. The Orioles had originally been a National League franchise before the turn of the century but lost their MLB team to contraction in 1899. By 1901 they had built a new stadium (Oriole Park IV) and joined the American League… only to again lose their franchise in 1903 when the Orioles moved to NYC to become the New York Yankees. After continuing on as a Triple-A team, the Federal League would build a new baseball stadium… Terrapin Park (Oriole Park V) to place a new renegade Major League franchise. Once again, Baltimore would lose its Major League team as the federal courts would rule that the Federal League was impeding on established Major League territories.
