War Memorial Stadium came into existence for the first time in 1937 thanks to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Work Progress Administration". The WPA's job was to create jobs by building all sorts of "things" throughout America. There were very few jobs available during the "Great Depression" and the WPA created work programs to help people pay their rents and feed their families at a very difficult time. Of course one of the most common things that were built by the WPA was... stadiums.
