In 1977, pro baseball tried to make a comeback in New Orleans, as the new Superdome touted itself as America's newest multi-purpose stadium. The Triple-A American Association saw New Orleans as a potentially excellent untapped market and the St. Louis Cardinals moved their Triple-A from Tulsa to New Orleans. Attendance was acceptable but even good crowds looked bleak in the 50,000 seat stadium. The one year experiment was deemed a failure and the Cardinals moved to Springfield Illinois' Robin Roberts Stadium for the 1978 season. New Orleans went back to being the largest city without professional baseball.
