The new team was terrible to start, going 66-81 (.449) on the season. The 89ers were basically a group of former MLB players who weren't good enough to make the MLB expansion team's roster. As soon as somebody began to play well, they were immediately promoted to the majors to try help the new parent club. Anybody decent who had been drafted wasn't old enough to play in Triple-A yet, and this wasn't like the expansion teams of now... the Rockies and Devil Rays all had some very choice picks to steal away from the other Major League teams. They also had free-agency. In 1962, you got whoever the other teams didn't want.
