Borchert Field was built in 1888, nestled into the corners of North 7th, North 8th
and Chambers. This bizarre looking ballpark is actually remarkably similar to
the Polo Grounds, in that it is long and stretched thin in order to fit into a
city block. Spectators in the 1st base line stands were facing directly at the
3rd baseline and had no view whatsoever of the right fielder. Same went for the
3rd base line stands, who couldn't see their left fielder. Mike Veeck used to
tell people to come two days in a row and sit on opposite sides from the day before,
so that they could see everyone. |
