Safeco Field would unlike the Kingdome… be a baseball only stadium and is actually considerably smaller than the former concrete monstrosity that the Mariners had played in. The seating capacity dropped at Safeco Field nearly 10,000 from the 57,000 that the Kingdome supported, to just 47,900 at Safeco Field. Though less fans are able to come to the ballpark and enjoy the game, there is no doubt… a much greater sense of intimacy at Safeco Field than was had at Seattle's former professional baseball park, "The Kingdome" (that is actually a ridiculous sort of an understatement). The Kingdome had outfield seating that was so overgrown that when balls were hit to the outfield, fans in the upper deck would be unable to tell if the ball was caught, fell in for a hit or went out for a home run. In fact you could barely see past the edge of the infield grass in some spots. The sightlines at Safeco Field meanwhile, are simply magnificent
