You can now see how the grandstand sat atop the brick and concrete supports. The ballpark grandstand was pretty elaborate and a strong facility. We don't know why Minor League Baseball ignored this ballpark for so long, but we do know that it came here in 1956, after the Statesville Pilots had put together a miserable last place season, in which they drew only 8,000 for the entire season (a normal opening day draw for most Single-A teams). The Pilots wouldn't even finish out the season. In 1956 they needed a new place to play and realized the gem that had grown in Thomson.
