We finish our look at the "Ballpark of Seattle" with our 5th and final stop at Safeco Field... the new home of the Seattle Mariners as of 1999. No ballpark since "The House that Ruth Built" has been so influenced by a single player than Safeco Field. The fact is, the Seattle Mariners were about to become the "Tampa Bay Mariners" and were ready to move into the Thunderdome (Tropicana Field) at the end of the season. Funding for a new ballpark had just been voted down in the polls as Seattle said goodbye to the Major Leagues perhaps forever. Then ... in the bottom of the 11th inning of the 1995 playoffs against the hated Yankees... a bunt single by Joey Cora... a base hit by Ken Griffey and a double by Edgar Martinez brought a shocking come from behind win as the Mariners won the ALDS. Fans were so amazed that their Mariners had actually won something, they voted in an emergency poll the following month to keep the Mariners in Seattle and build Safeco Field.
